Cordouan Lighthouse

Cordouan Lighthouse

Cordouan Lighthouse is one of the oldest and most remarkable offshore lighthouses in the world.
Built on a 150-hectare rocky plateau, it marks the entrance to the Gironde estuary. Located approximately equidistant from the Gironde and Charente coastlines (9 km), it alone constitutes cadastral plot number 1 of the municipality of Le Verdon-sur-Mer.

Since 1611, generations of lighthouse keepers have watched over Cordouan Lighthouse. Today, it is the only lighthouse in France that is still inhabited. Four keepers take turns, working in pairs, to ensure its operation and maintenance, and to welcome visitors.
Both a functional maritime structure and a historic monument, Cordouan embodies an exceptional maritime heritage.
