Who we are ?

The Association of the Cordouan and Grave Lighthouses

The Association of the Cordouan and Grave Lighthouses, formerly known as the “Association for the Preservation of the Cordouan Lighthouse”, was founded in 1981, following the decision by the Lighthouse and Beacon Service to close and sell the Cordouan Lighthouse.

It had been decided that Cordouan had become too costly, and was considered unnecessary in light of technological advances.

As a result of this action, the first restoration work on the Cordouan Lighthouse began in 1982. That same year, the idea of creating the Cordouan Lighthouse Museum was born, making it possible to exhibit photographs of the lighthouse so that it could be discovered despite its closure.

Since its founding, the Association has ensured compliance with three principles:

The Cordouan Lighthouse must remain State property.

The Cordouan Lighthouse must continue to fulfil its role as a maritime navigational aid.

The Cordouan Lighthouse must be manned 365 days a year.
